Any recommendations for a first car?

My sixteenth birthday is about six months away and i am looking at cars. I have a budget of about 8k-10k. I was looking at a 66 mustang but i live in cleveland and it did not meet my parents safety concerns. I would love to have a sports car, but am not sure that is very reasonable. any recommendations?
