How safe are tongue piercings?

My sixteenth birthday is in a few days and i was thinking about getting my tongue pierced on it. I was wondering how safe tongue piercings are? I looked it up online and all that came up were horror stories and disgusting infected tongue pictures. I used to be tongue tied (ankyloglossia-results when the frenulum is too short and tight, causing the movement of the tongue to be restricted.) when i was little, but the dentist did some kind of procedure to fix that. Could that cause any complications? I'm not worried about pain. I already have two tattoos and know a few reliable and clean shops that could get it done. Thanks for any info.
